We were successful in receiving £2590 form Awards for All (part of National Lottery) to construct a Living Willow Dome in our school grounds. This was a project led by Ganesh & Elaine from Creativewillow.com who with the pupils, staff and volunteers constructed a dome and also alongside the project many willow craft workshops were held.
Children who struggle to achieve are extremely adept when working outdoors using practical skills and school grounds provide an ideal opportunity to introduce everyone to the natural environment.
All the children and adult volunteers have learnt the rudiments of the craft such as using willow to make patterns and weaving strokes which are strong and structural.
This social project has provided a learning experience for all ages and involved curriculum skills such as maths, literacy, photography, technology and science.
The enthusiasm and professional guidance of Ganesh and Elaine from “Creative Willow” has made the construction of this dome so exciting and the knowledge that we have all taken away with us is just unquestionable.
A truly amazing experience!
As a habitat the dome will be superb for wildlife, sustaining different types of insects and therefore a magnet for birds. As well as an additional outside classroom it provides benefits to our local environment because willow absorbs carbon from the atmosphere, causing a positive impact on reducing our carbon footprint.
This project will not only benefit future generations of children atLandulphSchoolbut will extend into the wider community. As the structure requires annual maintaining, it will provide an interesting challenge for young and senior members to share.
